Kite Festival Kicks off the Cherry Blossom Festivities

The weather forecasters think it’s going to be a beautiful, sunny day tomorrow, so head down to the mall for the 44th annual Smithsonian Kite Festival. The skies will be filled with colorful kites that are sure to entertain the little ones. Kids will be able to make their own kites and watch the “Stingrays in Flight,” which will have kites designed to look like stingrays “swimming” through the sky and skimming low above the ground .

There are three competitions planned:

  • Handmade kite competition
  • Hot tricks showdown
  • Rokkaku Kite Challenge for teams (the goal of this event is to “cut” or “ground” the other teams)

It can get a bit breezy and chilly on the Mall during this event so make sure to dress appropriately. You can find a schedule for the day at the Smithsonian’s web site.

According to the National Park Service’s Rob DeFeo, the cherry blossoms will peak April 3-8. They’re getting pretty good with their predictions. This will be the tenth year in a row that the peak has landed during the week of the Cherry Blossom Festival. So, get ready Washington, we’ve had our fill of snow flakes this winter, it’s almost time for those light pink “flakes” to star falling on our city.
